METHPOL®   Carbomer / Acrylates Copolymers

Methpol range is a synthetic high molecular weight cross linked water soluble polymer of Acrylic acid, which is known as "Carbomer"/ "Acrylates polymers". It is widely used in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and household industries.
It is available in powder and liquid form, which is soluble in water, alcohols and glycols. Before neutralization, pH of Methpol grade solution lies between 2.5 and 3.0.

Products within the Carbomer polymer family are chemically similar in that they are all high molecular weight, crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymers. However, the polymers differ by crosslink density and can be grouped into the following categories.

Numerous enhancements have been made to the polymer family over time to address formulation demands, increase product robustness and improve product handling during processing. For example, the solvent system used to synthesize the polymers has evolved. Specifically, the "traditional" polymers are synthesized in benzene and the "toxicologically preferred" polymers are synthesized in either ethyl acetate or a cosolvent ethyl acetate/cyclohexane mixture. Additionally, a minor processing aid has been incorporated in the Carbomer polymers to provide greater versatility in formulating and processing.

General Application:
* Thickening - To produce wide range of viscosity and flow property
* Suspending - Suspending of insoluble ingredients like cosmetic beads
* Stabilizing - To provide emulsification and stabilization of high content of oils and waxes.
* Sustain and control release - Allows controlled drug release in solid dosage form in less concentration.

Pharmaceuticals

Methpol polymers are highly efficient gel matrix formers for controlling drug release in solid dosage forms. The polymers have demonstrated slower drug release rates at lower concentrations than other commercially available excipients, enabling overall formulation cost savings and smaller tablet sizes.

The traditional grades are chemically Carbomers. These are cross linked polyacrylic acid polymer, available in white powder. They are rheology modifiers, capable to provide vast viscosity profile. They work at neutral pH and form sparkling clear gel, hydro-alcoholic gels and creams.

Methpol polymers can be used in oral care applications such as toothpastes and ulcer gels, desensitizing and whitening products. These polymers primarily function as efficient thickeners and co-binders at low usage level. The viscoelastic structure of Methpol polymers imparts shear-thinning rheology and low thixotropy, which enables a clean ribbon of toothpaste to be extruded from the tube.

Suspension of insoluble ingredients in oral and topical liquids/semisolids.

* Thickening efficiency High viscosity at low concentration
* Uniform performance Carbomer gives uniform viscosity performance, while natural gums vary in their performance
* Temperature Stability There is no significant effect of temperature on polymer
* Unaffected by aging Excellent shelf life
* Microbial Resistance Resists bacterial attack and does not support mould growth
* Versatility Although primarily used in aqueous systems with neutralization, it can also be used in solvent systems, with or without neutralization
* Elegance Smooth and luxurious feeling
